Thatched Roofing

24/10/19

Whilst we consider ourselves to be specialists with traditionally constructed Cotswold buildings, our surveyors sometimes find themselves in neighbouring counties looking at houses of a different vernacular.

One of our surveyors recently carried out a Building Survey on a cottage in Wiltshire with a thatched roof. Fortunately, our surveyors have a broad understanding of many different types of construction, thatch included.

The thatched roof on this property was only around 8 years old and is in fairly good order. With thatch the usual areas to watch include the eaves and ridges which are secured by willow liggers and spars.

On this roof the ridge thatch and some of the liggers and spars had rotted so localised repairs were identified which included replacing the ridge. These repairs were recommended to the prospective purchaser and a budget and cost provided.
